This is very exciting news for anyone who owns an iPhone and likes the NIV, which is one of the most popular English bible translations. For 400 hours only starting this Saturday (just over two weeks) you can download the NIV on YouVersion’s free bible application.
Until now and probably after this event, the NIV has only been available in iPhones either by purchasing licensed applications, or by reading it online. Reading it online may be fine for some people, but for many of us it is major hindrance. What if you are out of range? For instance, I travel to work on the London Underground – not great for any wi-fi or telephone signals! And of course many iPad and iPod touch owners are 100% reliant on wi-fi networks, which may only be available at home.
So if you like the NIV, I would make sure you download this now. The reason for the 400 hours limit is no doubt partly because it would be too expensive for YouVersion to offer it much longer. But primarily it is part of a celebration of the 400th year since the King James version was first printed.
It is quite amazing to think that 400 years later, this translation still holds firm as one of the most popular versions. It wasn’t the first English translation actually – but undoubtedly it was the first to gain a big foothold in the English speaking world for many reasons, and has transformed the lives of millions of people.
Of course, you can already get the KJV as a free download on YouVersion and many other free applications, its’ copyright has long since passed!
There are detailed instructions on how to get the free NIV download onto you iPhone, Android, iPod or iPod Touch at the YouVersion website.
