Streams in the Desert is a great classic devotion by L.B. Cowman initially published in 1925. Mrs L.B. Cowman was a missionary in China and Japan between 1901 and 1917. Streams in the desert was inspired both by this time, and as she looked after her dying husband for six years.
Purpose Driven Life is a modern daily devotion based around Rick Warren’s well known book of the same name. Indeed Rick Warren even writes some of the devotional entries.

Strength for the Journey is a modern daily devotion from Joe Stowell provided by RBC ministries (who also provide the Our Daily Bread daily devotional). It is very well written, and perfect for those who want a devotion with a ‘bit more meat’.
Joe Stowell serves as teaching pastor at Harvest Bible Chapel and the RBC website says of him:
His prevailing passions are to express the heart of the gospel by keeping Christ preeminent in all of life; to embrace the body of Christ across color and class distinctions; and to focus attention on ministry needs in the urban centers, as well as on global needs and trends.

The Upper Room is a modern daily devotion which follows the normal structure of starting with a verse before writing a short and thought provoking article.
As well as the main devotion, each day also has a ‘thought for the day’, a prayer, a prayer focus and a related reading. These really help to make sure you don’t just read the devotion and stop there as it leads you into prayer.
Getting the devotion
Charles Spurgeon’s ‘Morning and Evening’ devotional is one of the best read Christian books. As well as a raft of other books he also wrote ‘Faith’ Checkbook’, another daily devotional. In his lifetime Charles Spurgeon was popular and drew huge crowds to his sermons. Now, he is even better known with his many books read across the world.
Spurgeon’s devotionals are rewarding and challenging to read, and if you’re considering beginning reading a daily devotional I suggest you start here!
If you are not familiar with Charles Spurgeon then the following synopsis from answers.com gives an idea why he is still so popular today. CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE
”…SHOULD A MAN LIKE ME RUN AWAY?… I WILL NOT…’ NEHEMIAH 6:11
He had confidence in God!
1) He had passion! He could not sleep at night for picturing the problem and seeing himself solving it (Nehemiah 1:3-4). That is what it takes!
2) He could motivate others! What good is your vision if you cannot involve others in it? (Nehemiah 4:17)
‘THIS I DECLARE OF THE LORD: HE ALONE IS MY…PLACE OF SAFETY… ‘ PSALM 91:2
let His peace fill your heart
‘Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor fear the dangers of the day, nor dread the plague that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. . .
‘If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you, no plague will come near your dwelling. For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you with their hands to keep you from striking your foot on a stone. . .
The devotions of Saint Anselm have recently been added to the The Christian Classics Ethereal Library. Saint Anselm was born near the border between what are now Italy and France (Aosta, Piedmont). He became the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1093, and is considered by many to be one of the most influential thinkers of medieval Europe and Christianity. Anselm was passionate that faith in God could be explained through reason and his motto was credo ut intelligam (”I believe so that I may understand”).
The CCEL website explains that for Anselm there was no clear separation between devotions and doctrine; that his fervent prayer was fueled by his robust theology, and the reverse was also true. Here as an excerpt:
Awake, my soul, awake! show your spirit, arouse your senses, shake off the sluggishness of that deadly heaviness that is upon you, begin to take care for your salvation. Let the idleness of vain imaginations be put to flight, let go of sloth, hold fast to diligence. Be instant in holy meditations, cleave to the good things which are of God: leaving that which is temporal, give heed to that which is eternal. Now in this godly employment of your mind, to what can you turn your thoughts more wholesomely and profitably than to the sweet contemplations of your Creator’s immeasurable benefits toward you. Consider therefore the greatness and dignity that he bestowed upon you at the beginning of your creation; and judge for yourself with what love and reverence he ought to be worshiped.
