Accountable iPhone application

If you have an accountability partner this application may be useful to track any questions, or areas of your life that you struggle with.

You start with a list of generic questions such as:

• Have I spent time daily in the Scriptures and in prayer?
• Have I been completely honest in all of my financial dealings today?

Also, if you pick the one that you are being held accountable to, you are given the opportunity to add a little explanation of what happened or why.

However you can add any accountability points you want yourself in the options, or turn off he default ones.

So then each day (or week or whatever) you can go in and run through he list. You can store emails in the options so that you can quickly email it on to your accountability partner/s. Of course, you could even do this on your own – although it will be much more effective if shared with someone you trust.

This is a good simple application that works well.

It would be nice to be able to track your responses over time, with some statistical analysis of your inputs though. Nothing too fancy, but something that you could easily use when you sit down face to face.

Christian Prayer Journal Free iPhone app

The Christian Prayer Journal lets you track your prayers, and share them with others if you decide to.

It is very easy to use, just tap in the prayer and choose a ranking from 1-5. You can then also decide to either keep it private or share it with others. You can also make additional notes on the prayer, such as if/when it was answered.

Importantly you can password protect the whole application so that no one can sneak in and see your prayers. There is also the ability to export your prayers to a server, or email them all to yourself, so you can have them backed up.

If you are online there is also the opportunity to see a wall of prayers, which may or may not be useful. But also, you can share prayers and follow people. A bit like a simple facebook or twitter. So then, for those prayers that you choose to share, whoever is following you will also be able to pray for you.

Useful features for the future

This is a very simply application, but it would be much better if you could class some prayers as finished. Currently they all appear on your prayer list unless you delete them. As there is the opportunity to put comments on a prayer it would be good to keep those prayers that have been answered in a different section, so that you can go back and check them in the future.

A more advanced feature might entail allowing you to specify a day for each prayer, so that you can pray through your list throughout the week every week.

Month of Proverbs NASB Edition Free

The “Month of Proverbs NASB Edition Free”iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch application lets you read the Proverbs in the NASB translation over one month. As with the similar Psalms application, it is very simple to use.

The book of Proverbs is split into 31 days, you then just go through them day by day.

There is not much more to add, as it is a simple application – but its strength is that it is the bible!

Baptist Bible Hour’s iPhone Daily Devotion

BBH Daily Devotion is simple free iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch application from Baptist Bible Hour, who exist to “call men and women back to the beauty and sufficiency of the Bible”. When you open up your iPhone you are presented with the devotion for that day, and you can also search for any devotion by date if you missed one. This works even when you don’t have access to the internet.

If you connected to the internet then you can also listen to recent broadcasts from BBH, or visit their website without leaving the application.

This is a great way to access the Baptist Bible Hour with minimal effort at all.

Month of Psalms NASB Edition Free

The “Month of Psalms NASB Edition Free”iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch application lets you read the psalms in the NASB translation over one month. It is very simple to use with the first page giving you a choice of days 1-31, so you’ll have to double up a day for some months, and even more so in February.

Just tap on the day and you can read through the psalms selected for that day.

Other, more complete bible study applications would also offer this option – but if you are interested in reading just the Psalms in one month then this is a much simpler way to go about it. Also, it is available as a download, and there are no other free alternatives to download the NASB (apart from YouVersion for a limited time).

Pocket Bible from Laridian

Laridian’s free iPhone application Pocket Bible is a fantastic bible app to have available. It is fast to navigate around, and is helped greatly by having a good collections of other books such as commentaries, dictionaries and devotions which add an extra level to its usefulness.

When you first open up Pocket Bible on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch you will have access to the KJV. However if you create a free login you can also gain access to more free versions, with the full list of bibles including:

Compared to many other free iPhone bible study applications, the number of free books available to download is impressive, with 14 free books covering a good range of styles included. Using the Pocket Bible

There are six icons at the bottom of the screen. The first lets you decide which book to open. This is one area the Laridian Pocket Bible handles differently from many other applications, with the ability to have more than one book open at any one time (two on the iPhone or iPod Touch, 5 on the iPad). This works quite well so you can flip between a commentary or the bible by tapping the top or bottom of the screen.

The second icon is Go To, and it is here you can quickly navigate to any part of the bible, or indeed any chapter of the book you are reading

If you tap anywhere on the left or right of the screen you can go back or forward a page in the book you have open.

A lot of the options when dealing with texts can be accessed by tapping and holding down on a verse, word or sentence of a book. In the verse menu you can take notes, bookmark, highlight or copy the verse. These all operate as you would expect, and you have choice of the colour of highlighting too which could be useful.

The word menu (also found by tapping and holding) gives you the option of searching or looking up the word that was tapped. So, if you have downloaded one of the free dictionaries you can then quickly get the definition! Just under the word menu you can also choose to view a split screen with two different books (or indeed the same book twice).

The other icons that are at the bottom of the screen let you search, go back to your last step, read todays daily devotion, or go to the main menu for options or to download books.

Design & Layout

There are lots of options available for playing around with the way the text and pictures are shown on the Pocket Bible. This goes beyond just changing the font size but also when menus show, whether to show Strong’s numbers, the words of Christ in red, and many more choices.

Overall the design works well and is relatively intuitive as well as being fast. If I was being really picky (which it seems I am) some of the colours and graphics aren’t quite in line with the iPhone’s style. But that is being picky!

Other Features

Along with other good options, it is a really nice feature to be able to decide what is copied when you copy and paste. With Pocket Bible you can choose whether to include verse numbers, notes and how to delimit verses. You can even do this with HTML if you are brave, to add line breaks or anything you particularly want to!

Additional Features that would be nice to have

It would be great to have a reading plan for the bible available, this would fit in well with the way the devotional books are treated.

Bibles for America iPhone Application

Bibles for America are perhaps best known for sending free New Testaments in North America, but they have now released a free Bible Study iPhone application. In many ways the Bibles for America application is a topical bible, or at least that is how it is easiest to use it. Read the review below to see the features of this bible study software for your iPhone, iPad of iPod Touch.

The bible

The KJV version, although only the New Testament, and also you need to have online access to be able to use the bible.

Using the bible

The main emphasis of the application is to choose the option of looking at a bible study unit (there are over a hundred areas). From here you then get a collection of New Testament verses on that topic. This is not an exhaustive topical bible, but it is a useful way to quickly find verses on a given topic.

You can also set up a reading plan, or search the bible for a passage or word/phrase. To find a passage you need to type the reference; it would be great if this could be selected from a drop down list as well.

Holy Bible Free

Holy Bible Free is a simple free bible application with a choice of 8 bibles. Whilst it is not as feature rich or beautifully designed as some other free iPhone bibles, it is easy to use and operates quickly.

The main emphasis is on reading the text, with options to navigate to the old or new testaments at the bottom. Once you are reading simply scroll through the text, or use the verse scroll bar on the right of the page

Other features

The bible reading plan is useful to allow you to read the bible in one year. You can also mark verses as favourites as you read, and these can be grouped into different sections.

There is also a simple search function included to find any word or phrase in your choice of bible.

Overall using the application is fast, and the design is intuitive.

KJV Bible Audiobook

KJV Bible Audiobook has one feature that I have not seen elsewhere on a free bible application for the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you can listen to the bible being spoken to you even when you are offline. The only downside of this is that it weighs in at just under 1gb in size. But if you do want to listen through the bible and need offline capabilities I think this is a price worth paying.

The audio bible is based on the KJV, with a KJV text also included so that you can read whilst you listen. You can either scroll through the verses yourself, or set it up to scroll automatically.

You can select any verse or chapter that you want to listen to, search for a text and listen to that, or even go through a bible reading plan

However, there are more features tucked away that add even more value to this iPhone application.

Offline features

Here are some of the offline features of the KJV Audio Bible:

• You can access maps of the main geographical areas of the bible.
• You can have a daily bible reading, and just click through to have it read to you.
• You can take notes, bookmarks, see your reading history and search.

Online features

There are also some additional features only accessibly when you are online. You can view further translaitons including the NIV, although this is not through the normal bible navigation of the application but an embedded web browser which is not as easy to use.

There are also links to a small collection of other resources and a history of the KJV bible.

Wave Bible

I’ve seen plenty of iPhone bible applications now, but the Wave bible does stand out as very unique. Initially, the colourful design make it feel very different from other bible software. But very quickly it is the simplicity and usability of the software that grabs you. By sticking to the approaches that apple use on their iPhone applications (swiping, tapping & pinching) you quickly feel at home navigating around the bibles. There are some bible applications that I use for other reasons and still pause to think what to do next to flip the page – with Wave Bible you don’t need to think, you just read*.

*Obviously you do think when reading the bible, but that thought can be focused on the text rather than turning over a page or scrolling through the text.

Whilst you can add other paid for translations such as the NASB, the free bibles which are included offline include:

• God’s Word
• Greek New Testament
• They are also working on a Hebrew old testament

Reading the bible

Wave bible takes a slightly different approach to navigating through the available bibles than other applications. Whether you like this or not is probably down to personal preference. To change bibles you swipe across the screen, and you are taken to the next version. You can choose which of the 4 bibles show if you want to ignore one translation. The good thing about this is that it is very fast to flip from one translation to other.

Another nice feature is that if you pinch the screen in landscape mode it will add an extra column so that you can read two bibles at the same time. This also works very intuitively, and you can even add more than two columns which would be particularly useful if you have an iPad.

Greek words

When you are reading the Greek text if you click on a word then the morphology and lexicon (i.e. the English word) will pop up. A nice feature as well is that if you then go to the search area that Greek word will automatically populate the search box so you can then quickly search the whole bible.

Possible Improvements

On the whole I do like the Wave bible. It has taken a different approach to putting the bible on the iPhone and so it is going to get its own set of fans. This is probably a wise move as it means will not necessarily be going head to head with the big guns and struggling to compete.

There are a few changes though that I think would make it even better. Firstly whilst I don’t find the colours bad, I would prefer to be able to choose my own colours.

It would also be good if you could reorder the bibles so that you can decide which version comes first, second, and so on.
