The Don’t Waste Your Life website/blog from Desiring God has recently been given an uplift. It is targeted to younger people (in their 20s) but would appeal to other people too. The inspiration for the site has come from John Piper’s book of the same name. You can read this well received and challenging book free online at the Desiring God website.
A key part of the blog is the video podcasts, which are published on the website, YouTube and itunes. This includes interviews, and mini-sermons from John Piper. They are 1-3 minute videos that combine images and gospel in a way that magnifies Christ and motivates you to not waste your life. New episodes are posted every 1 or 2 weeks. Recently there was a three part interview with the band Mainstay, and you can see the first one below:
You can also join the facebook group which is very active if you are so inclined. It would be great if there were more blog posts on the website, but it seems to be more set up to support the distribution of the free videos. This is not a bad thing though and if you have a spare few minutes it is worth watching a couple, especially if you feel you are wasting your life…

Chris Roberts has come up with a great way to add ESV bible verses onto your Wordpress powered website. It is very flexible and gives you several ways of displaying verses. The key benefit is that you do not need to write out the bible verse, just the reference, so it should save you time. Here are the different ways you can use the plug-in to display verses:
- Tooltip
This is a useful option, as it shows just the bible reference but if you click on it it brings up a pop-up box with the verse. - Inline
This adds the bible reference with the verse and displays it inline in your post. - Blockquote
This adds the bible reference with the verse and displays it as a blockquote for added emphasis. - Link
This is a useful one as it displays the bible reference as it is, but makes it into a link to the ESV website. - Ignore!
This will simply ignore your default setting and leave any bible references as text.
You can set one of these as a default way to display all verses, and this can be overridden on a case by case basis by following the instructions on the plug-in page.
I recently mentioned the new site Blogrush and how it could be added to Christian websites. One of the issues raised was the current lack of categories available to position your blog in. This can result in some blog titles being shown that you wouldn’t want on your site. The big question is, regardless of how well Blogrush may or may not perform for you, is this is a risk worth taking? Are you willing to loose control over your sidebars and have sites recommended that you actually disagree with?
What is the worst that could happen?
The worst case scenario is that you end up having a glut of inappropriate blog post titles displayed on your site. For instance, I have already seen on my blog:
- Free numerology reading
- Free Sunnipath Course Clips on Youtube
- Taurus (Astrology on the cusp)
On the face of it you may instantly feel that you are not willing to accept such titles on your blog. This is heightened for non-secular sites. If I was running a blog on my favourite football team it would not particularly bother me if there were posts about athletics or shopping included. However, as a Christian I’m not so keen on a site set up to promote the Christian faith and help Christians have content including mysticism.
How can you stop it?
Blogrush has obviously thought of this, and included the option of blocking both specific websites and specific keywords from being included in the sites shown on your blog. I am in the process of adding various words and sites and will be interested to see in a couple of weeks the type of blog titles that are showing then.
It is also likely that future improvements will include the addition of more specific categories, so that for instance you would just have a Christian section. I am confident that this will be added soon based on the speed Blogrush are already implementing changes. There will be an updated post on the specific use of Blogrush in a couple of days, as an update to my initial post.
Of course, even with the best of your efforts, there will always be titles of posts that you would rather not be included.
Don’t forget, it works both ways…
For me, I think this is a risk worth taking. The key point being that this also means the Christian message will be making it on to non-Christian blogs too. I can fully understand that some may feel it would be detrimental to their site, but if Blogrush ends up being a success then I think the pros will outweigh the cons.
The Between Two Worlds blog has highlighted a fantastic opportunity to get a free book. Basically you get to preview, review, and then receive a free copy of John Owen’s Communion with the Triune God.
So as you can see, it is not 100% free, as you have to read the book (you are supplied with a pdf) and then review it before you get the free hard copy of the book. Nonetheless, this is a great opportunity if you are willing to do that.
I’ve already got my copy, but Crossway will stop sending out any more PDFs after October 1, so don’t wait too long!
You can find out exactly how to get your pdf copy by going to the Between Two Worlds blog.

There has been another collection of sermons added to the Desiring God website. According to the Desiring God Blog, “Every two years John Piper completes a rotation of weekend seminars on different aspects of Christian doctrine and practice.”
These seminars added include the following areas:
- Biblical Eldership
- Desiring God
- Future Grace
- Gravity and Gladness on Sunday Morning: The Pursuit of God in Corporate Worship
- Prayer, Meditation, and Fasting
- Sexual Complementarity: The Pursuit of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood
- Suffering for the Sake of the Body: The Pursuit of People Through Pain
- TULIP
- Why We Believe the Bible
Also, you may want to read an article on the ‘Between Two Worlds’ blog which touches on the Desiring God website, and how providing free stuff helps to spread the gospel.

All in all, it is a delicious little add-on!
You can use alternative ways of showing the text, such as the snippet mode (shows an inline link), the link mode (shows a link to the actual ebible website) or the study mode (same as the link mode, but with a more comprehensive result provided by ebible).
Also, when the window is open, it gives a link for a study on that passage, and studies on the key topics of any passage.
You can currently choose from a few translations to show including NIV, ESV, NASB and MSG.
I installed this by using the Wordpress plug-in, but you can utilise this on any site by putting the JavaScript code they provide in the header section.
Ease of use etc.
It can be slightly confusing finalising the set up and finding the API key that you need. Once you have signed into the account just go to this link to find your API key: http://ebible.com/api/signup
Once it is installed, it is dream to use as it does all the work for you! There is no need to trawl through your website adding lots of links as ebiblecious does all that for you. You just have to be careful the verses are in an allowable format. For instance a few of mine had full stops after the verse - which stops it working. As you can see the following verse won’t work as it is in the wrong format- Gal.1:1.
From the point of view of the end user, it is also very easy to use, just hover the mouse over the verse and it will bring up the passage. They do not need to install anything at all - it will automatically work when you have built in in to your website.
Presentation
You can see what it looks like be resting your mouse on these examples (Romans 1:1-3, Gen 3:1-5).
The default view is a good and clean look. You can change the CSS of the file to make it blend in with your website as well, although I’ve not yet had time to test this yet.
Summary
This is a fantastic plug in and it really adds value to your website. Once installed it is no hassle at all to use. I honestly can’t think of reason why you would not want to use this if your run a website! All in all, it is a delicious little add-on!
