Christmas Lantern

Whilst many of us will be unable to get to church on Christmas Day either because our church doesn’t have a service, or because we’re busy in the kitchen preparing a feast, this doesn’t mean we don’t get to hear a great Christmas sermon!

Whilst the advance of online media will never replace meeting together, the wealth of sermons on line is perfectly suited to help in this situation. So if you are looking for some great free Christmas sermons then here is a selection of some of the best places to find them on the internet.

I doubt you’ll have time to listen or read all of them, but you’ll definitely find something enriching in the selection of free Christmas sermons below:

Desiring God

John Piper’s Desiring God website is packed full of great content, here is a selection of just a few of the best Christmas sermons preached:

Click on the links below to listen or read the sermons, some you can even watch:

Charles Spurgeon

If you want a deep Christmas sermon then look no further than Charles Spurgeon. Here are four Christmas sermons from the Spurgeon Archives. Obviously none of Spurgeon’s sermons were recorded so these are text versions of his sermons:

John MacArthur

John MacArthur has just made his entire back catalogue of sermons available free online. Here are three from the archives:

Mars Hill

This Christmas sermon by Mark Driscoll is the culmination of the Vintage Jesus series and looks at the historical significance of the birth of Christ and the lasting changes it has left on earth.

You can visit the Mars Hill website to listen to it, or even just watch the sermon below.

Holy Trinity Brompton

Here are two sermons from the Church that created the Alpha course:

Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards was not big on Christmas sermons but his Glorious Grace sermon is one of his most powerful early sermons, although it is not known exactly when it was preached.

Last years’ popular post Where to find the best free Christmas clip art remains a great guide to finding the high quality free Christian clip art for Christmas.

Rather than rehash the same post here is a collection of the best 10 Christmas images available free in Flickr.

All of the images are free to be used, but ensure you check the Creative Commons License of the picture as some may not let you alter the image. You should always provide a link to the pictures if you use them.

With the beginning of December just a few weeks away thoughts may be turning to getting hold of a good advent calendar. Advent calendars where first used by German Lutherans in the early 19th century, often by simply drawing chalk lines on their doors each day. Now they are often used for children as a great way to count down to Christmas Day when we celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Sadly most advent calendars these days are stuffed with chocolate and may not contain any references to Jesus. Here though are some of the best free online sources of Christian advent calendars, please leave a comment if you know any better ones!

The Nativity advent calendar

advent-nativity.jpgThe Nativity advent calendar is provided by New Line Cinema who created the Nativity film. You need to download the software (Mac and PC versions are available) and you can then run it each day. Every day you get a picture from the film and a verse from the bible by clicking on the stars. I’m assuming once it actually gets to December the correct star for the day will flash otherwise it is quite tricky to work out which one to press!

Graphically the Nativity calendar is impressive, and it is clear Christian too.

Make it from scratch!

If you’re artistic and creative then you may want to make the entire advent calendar yourself. St Luke’s Episcopal Church has a simple to follow guide.

advent-f1.jpgIf that all seems at bit much then the advent calendar template used at Presentation Helper may be of use. It is not actually Christian as you can see from the image to the right. However it would be easy to tweak it to have a Christian theme. It comes in a powerpoint format that you can use on your computer, or you can print it off to make it more of a traditional advent calendar.

Advent calendars for your website

advent-calendar-javascript.jpgSean McManus’s javascript advent calendar is only for the brave! If you own your own website you can create your own advent calendar page that gives a message when you click on a given box. Obviously this can be made as Christian (or not) as you like.

The example provided works, but I’d imagine it would take a little bit of effort to get this advent calendar looking good for your website.

Advent devotions

The American Bible Societies advent page is not strictly an advent calendar, but it does have lots of devotional materials with a particular focus on the gospels.

free Christian calendarIf you are about to start looking for a calendar for 2009 then look no further! I’ve created a 2009 Christian calendar that you can download for free. Each month has a high quality picture and a bible verse. There is also space for you to write your diary entries. You are free to distribute and print the calendar as many times as you like.

The calendar is in a PDF format and was created in iPhoto. Simply follow the steps below to print out your free Christian calendar for 2009.

1) Download the free Christian Calendar
To save space I’ve zipped the file. If you have a PC right click here with your mouse and select “Save target as…” . If you have a Mac then right click or hold [ctrl] and click here and choose “Save link as…” from the menu.

free Christian calendar2) Print the free Christian Calendar
You have a couple of choices here. If you like life to be easy you could pay a printer to print it off professionally. Obviously this isn’t free but you may get a better output depending on how good your printer is.

The alternative is to print it out yourself. You could just print it out on normal paper if you need to save costs. For best results though use proper photo paper and put the pictures on the glossy side (apart from the cover page).

3) Make the free Christian calendar

Create a hole single hole punch in the middle of all the top of each of the pictures. You’ll use this hole to hang it up. Then you just need to attach all of the pages together either by using a spindle or some other method. You should be able to get a good idea by looking at the pictures in this post.

Credits
Most of the pictures for the calendar have come from Flickr. These have been provided free of charge and legally by whoever took the pictures. The links to all of the pictures are given on the calendar on the relevant page.

the-peasant-princess.jpgMark Driscoll of Mars Hill is currently running through a series of sermons on the Song of Songs book from the bible.

My wife Liy and I currently listening to each sermon and discussing it and the questions that are raised. It is exciting to have a series of talks that focus on this area and I know we have already greatly benefited as a family from listening to it.

You can listen to the sermons by signing up to the free podcast, or simply listening or downloading them online.

The sermons are in Mark Discoll’s normal style of being biblically rich and practically helpful. There is also a little Q&A sessions at the end where his wife joins him to answer questions from the various campuses.

fcr-home.pngOctober was a busy month here at free Christian resources with the website going through a major redesign. The overall theme looks very similar but the layout and interlinking of the website have been improved. A new home page has also been created (with only a couple of minor tweaks still required) that should be much more useful than the old home page. Please let me know what you think!

This did reduce the amount of time spent reviewing other websites, but there were still some good resources added including:

Suffering and the Sovereignty of God by John Piper and Justin Taylor
This book includes various essays that reconcile the sovereignty of God with our suffering. Providing the whole book free will help many more Christians benefit from this book.

The sale, and then acquisition of Bible Gateway was highlighted. It is great news that this popular bible study website will continue to operate.

2008 Desiring God conference
The recordings (and text) for the 2008 Desiring God conference were provided, as ever the recordings are superb and bound to enrich your spiritual lives. John Piper and Mark Driscoll were among the preachers.

The ESV Study bible (Post 1, Post 2)
The ESV study bible was launched. Of course this is a paid for product, but they did provide some free sections which are worth looking at, and in themselves are comprehensive (e.g. the whole of 1 John and Esther)

mars-hill.jpgThe Resurgence website has recently posted the Mars Hill “Shepherding a Child’s Heart” parenting Conference onto their website.

The conference was led by Dr Tripp who said the following about parenting:

“Parents tend to focus on the externals of behavior rather than the internal overflow of the heart. We tend to worry more about the “what” of behavior than the “why.” Accordingly, most of us spend an enormous amount of energy in controlling and constraining behavior. To the degree and extent to which our focus is on behavior, we miss the heart.”

I am really excited to start working through this series, although I’m currently going through Mars Hill’s Song of Songs series with my wife Lily so it will have to wait until after then! Thanks to Zach Nielson for highlighting this update to the Resurgence website.

Here is a list of the main resources that you can access:

Session 1: The Call to Formative Instruction

Session 2: Giving Kids a Vision for God’s Glory

Session 3: Helping Kids Understand Authority

  • Session 4: Helping Kids Understand the Heart

    about me

My name is David Sawyer and I’m in my early thirties and live in Stratford, East London, UK. I became a Christian in my mid 20s and attend the same NewFrontiers church that I was at when I asked Jesus into my life.

fCr logoI am married with two young children (one more on the way!) and work full time as an accountant for a major UK charity. As you can imagine, trying to fit writing for ‘free Christian resources’ around a full time job, a family and a church life is rather challenging!

    about my church

I attend Church for the City - East London. It is a Newfrontiers church covering East London. Click on either of the links to get more information.

We also meet each week on a Wednesday in Stratford. If you are interested in coming along please email me davidmsawyer@gmail.com
