I’d like to start by apologising to anyone that came across posts on this site with adverts for ring tones. If you thought they looked like spam then you were correct, my website was hacked by some sneaky people.

Thankfully I caught it relatively quickly and am in the process of improving the security of the website. There haven’t been any more successful attacks in the last few days so I think my initial steps are working. The damage to the website was minimal and has been rectified, and as far as I can tell no-one clicked through to purchase the overpriced ringtones.

On a lighter note free Christian resources was recently reviewed by Frank Carr, who writes a blog called OpTempo. If you are interested in blogging then this site is worth checking out. He is also currently offering to do free reviews of websites so if you fancy having your website given the once over then pop over to his site and leave your details. I found it a really useful exercise and have implemented (or am about to implement) most of the suggested changes. It was a positive review and it is really good to get an impartial view from a third party.

One specific thing he mentioned was my posts about the names of Jesus, which have been sparse to say the least! This string of posts is back on the agenda so look out for more of those soon.

Challie.com logoI have linked to Tim Challies’ blog a few times in the past, so it is fitting to recommend his blog. If you have a passion for Christian books, then this blog is the blog for you. A large part of Challies.com comprises book reviews and comments, or other literature related topics (e.g. his recent post “Reading better with Richard Baxter”).

Tim’s book reviews are both concise and clear. He doesn’t fall in to the trap of many reviewers by writing a mini-book in itself for a review! Also, his writing style is good, and more importantly he seems a thoroughly grounded Christian.

If you want to know more about Tim, he gives the following quote about himself in the biography of on of his books:

Tim Challies is a leading evangelical blogger and editor of Discerning Reader (www.discerningreader.com), a site dedicated to discerning reviews of books that are of interest to Christians. A self-employed web designer, Tim lives in the outskirts of Toronto, Ontario with his wife and three children.

On top of all of this his site is superbly presented, I guess the fact that is his job goes a long way to explaining why! All in all this is a consistently well written blog that is worth subscribing to.

Newfrontiers logoNewfrontiers is a worldwide family of churches numbering around 500 churches in over 40 nations around the world. In fact the church I attend is a member of Newfrontiers, and having only been a member of one church it is obviously a group of churches that I love. The mission of Newfrontiers is as follows:

“With a passionate commitment to build the church according to New Testament principles, we believe that the most effective form of evangelism is worked out from strong local churches.”

Just a couple of week ago there was the annual “leaders” training in Brighton (UK) which I was fortunate enough to attend some of. This is leaders in a broad sense, so for instance it would include small group leaders and worship leaders. It is certainly not just for the actual top dogs in the churches. Because it is a global church many people obviously cannot attend, and therefore all of the sermons are made available on the internet. There is a few other bits and bobs on the website as well:

Main content

  • Sermons from various conferences
  • Theological papers
  • Bible Study - Closer to God
  • Monthly magazine

Sermons

The sermons cover the following conferences:

  • Together on a mission 2006 & 2007
  • Mobilise 2006 & 2007
  • Kingdom Come 2007

“Together on a mission” is the leaders conference I mentioned earlier and covers many areas including running alpha, preaching, spiritual authority, church planting and The Authority And Inerrancy Of The Bible.

Mobilise happens alongside the Together on a mission conference and is aimed towards students and 20s with the focus on mission (whether that be domestically or abroad). Some of the sermons include Preaching the Bible in the 21st Century, Making good life decisions and Duty, Discipline Or Devotion?

The Kingdom Come conference has more of the same.

What is great about these preaches is that they are all aimed at building up the church’s leaders and as such can cover a slightly different content than on a normal Sunday. So for instance, on a Sunday you would expect (I hope!) to hear the gospel load and clear to bring salvation - but the aim of these talks is training.

The quality of speakers is high and does not just include people from Newfrontiers churches. For instance there is quite a few preaches from Rob Rufus and Wayne Grudem. All of the preaches (that I have heard) firmly realise that it is through God’s power and grace that we can become great leaders. There are no quick fix answers or “pay $1,000 for blessing”. But that does not mean we should not strive to improve ourselves and this where listening to these sermons can really help.

If you prefer, you can also subscribe to itunes and get one preach a week direct to your iPod/mp3 player.

Theological papers

These papers look at some of the hot potato issues that rear themselves in the church and includes issues such as atonement, euthanasia and masculinity. These are provided in pdf format and tend to be rather meaty in their content - not the kind of thing to read in a spare five minutes! They are superbly written though and cover social, historical and biblical arguments.

Bible Study - Closer to God

There is also a weekly bible study from Scripture Union’s ‘Closer to God’. These are fantastic courses to do. They are not too heavy but are very rewarding. In many ways they are bit like daily devotions but as you get a couple of questions you are forced to apply it to your life. It also builds the study into your time with God so that it does not just become an exercise in puffing up your mind.

Monthly magazine

You can also get the monthly Newfrontiers magazine. This is not simply a newsletter but includes lots of teaching, book reviews and interviews of prominent Christians.

Ease of use etc.

The sermons are sorted by conference, speaker with the topics covered clearly shown so it does not take long to see what you are after.

Presentation

This is a good site, not flashy or anything but well designed and laid out.

Summary

If you are interested in learning more about any aspect of contributing to your church, then you are likely to find the sermons here of use.

After a chance encounter in a friend’s bathroom I realised that actually, you can get The Word for Today from different countries. In my initial review I said it was only available in hard copy in the UK. I won’t go into why she got the New Zealand version despite living in London as it is not that interesting a story!

The Word for Today is available in all of the following places:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • U.K.
  • U.S.A.

The actual daily devotions are the same, but the covers are different (and the adverts and things like that)

The main page for all of UCB is here:

I have updated the initial review to take into account this “new” information.

Vertical Music
Fed up trying to find good quality free worship songs… that are legal? Hopefully this website will go some way to satisfying you.

Quality music with a little extra thrown in for free!

You may have noticed that a few of the recent recommended free songs have come from this website. Vertical Music is primarily a music store, but on some albums they offer a free mp3 song that you can download. What is so great about this site is the high standard of the songs that are free - they are almost all superb worship songs. Some of the artists included are Hillsongs and the New Life Church.

Also, for all the albums (that I looked at) you can download a pdf of the words and sheet music/chords. This is even for those songs that are not free. Rather than cluttering up this review with a full list, I will be adding a stand alone page for this in the future.

How do I get the free songs then?

  1. Sign up to the website
  2. You will notice a ‘featured free song’ box at the top, so you could start by looking at that
  3. The rest are slightly less obvious, basically though any songs in mp3 format are the ones they are offering for free. So you just need to find those songs…
  4. Thankfully they have mp3 in the name so simply go to the search box and look for “mp3″
  5. And there you go! A list of all of the current free songs you can get! Just go to the individual pages to get the mp3 songs (you may need to right click and “save link as”)

You can also sign up to an email list to be notified of any future free ones, or you can just check out the free songs category of this blog and I will post it there.

What else is there?

A really nice touch on this site is that there are some additional articles written by worship leaders on the site. These are not all articles just for people in worship bands though. It covers topics such as:

  • Bible Resources
  • Personal Growth
  • Local Ministry
  • Global Vision
  • Practical Training(practical worship help)
  • Vertical Vision (about worship music, including AW Tozer’s ‘The Art of True Worship’)

You can get to these articles by going to the ‘Resources’ section of the website.

Summary

Quality music with a little extra thrown in for free!

I recently reviewed the Desiring God website, but since then they’ve added yet more content! They have now created two YouTube accounts and are beginning to post short clips. As it is new, there is not loads of videos to look at, however I was impressed by the quality. You can see one of the videos below:

The two accounts they have set up are ‘Desiring God Conferences’ and ‘Desiring God Don’t Waste Your Life’. The first is focused on an upcoming conference, whilst the second will be updated every week or other week and have small gospel based videos to help you not waste your life!

All in all, it is a delicious little add-on!

What simple (and free) application could really improve the usability of your website with minimal effort? ebibleicious may just be the answer! When installed, whenever anyone rests their mouse over a bible verse on your website, it will bring up that verse in a little pop up style window. It is not at all intrusive as when you move the mouse away the verse simply disappears. This is great as it means your readers aren’t directed to another site as they can be on some other similar bible verse searches.

You can use alternative ways of showing the text, such as the snippet mode (shows an inline link), the link mode (shows a link to the actual ebible website) or the study mode (same as the link mode, but with a more comprehensive result provided by ebible).

Also, when the window is open, it gives a link for a study on that passage, and studies on the key topics of any passage.

You can currently choose from a few translations to show including NIV, ESV, NASB and MSG.

I installed this by using the Wordpress plug-in, but you can utilise this on any site by putting the JavaScript code they provide in the header section.

Ease of use etc.

It can be slightly confusing finalising the set up and finding the API key that you need. Once you have signed into the account just go to this link to find your API key: http://ebible.com/api/signup

Once it is installed, it is dream to use as it does all the work for you! There is no need to trawl through your website adding lots of links as ebiblecious does all that for you. You just have to be careful the verses are in an allowable format. For instance a few of mine had full stops after the verse - which stops it working. As you can see the following verse won’t work as it is in the wrong format- Gal.1:1.

From the point of view of the end user, it is also very easy to use, just hover the mouse over the verse and it will bring up the passage. They do not need to install anything at all - it will automatically work when you have built in in to your website.

Presentation

You can see what it looks like be resting your mouse on these examples (Romans 1:1-3, Gen 3:1-5).
The default view is a good and clean look. You can change the CSS of the file to make it blend in with your website as well, although I’ve not yet had time to test this yet.

Summary

This is a fantastic plug in and it really adds value to your website. Once installed it is no hassle at all to use. I honestly can’t think of reason why you would not want to use this if your run a website! All in all, it is a delicious little add-on!
