If you own an iPhone or iPod Touch then there are plenty of great Christian applications and websites that you may be interested in.

The iPhone and iPod Touch resources have been split into five sections to make it easier to find exactly what you are after. You can find the best iPhone and iPod Touch Christian applications by browsing the menu on the right or clicking on the headings of the various sections below.

(1) Bible applications

The bible application section includes any applications that you download from the iTunes store that you can use for bible study purposes. These really unlock the power of the iPhone and iPod Touch, with many allowing you to read bibles offline even when there is no wifi or 3G signal.

(2) Other applications

This section includes any other Christian iPhone and iPod Touch applications that you can download for free from the iTunes store.

(3) Bible websites

The bible websites page reviews the best bible study options from websites that have been specifically set up for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You will need to be connected to the internet to be able to use these, but then tend have more translations available than the bible applications.

This section includes the popular posts, “The best iPhone bible for you” and “The definitive guide to free iPhone bibles”.

(4) Other websites

The last main section has any other Christian websites designed for the iPhone that do not relate to bible study.

(5) New iPhone and iPod Touch content

This section is handy to see the latest iPhone and iPod Touch reviews here at free Christian resources.

Other great iPhone applications

Finally, there are some great iPhone applications that are not strictly Christian, but are bound to help you make the most of both your iPhone and other Christian websites. These are mentioned on this iPhone application post.

church pews sermonThree months after the launch of free Christian resources I began to put a lot of effort into finding and tweaking the theme/design that I wanted. Finally, as the year almost closes I think I am generally happy with the look of the website! There were so many superb websites reviewed over the three months ending in September, but here are the pick of the posts:

Desiring God
Desiring God is without a doubt one of the finest Christian websites on the internet. John Piper has put all of his sermons and books from the last twenty five years online for free. Not only that but they are high quality products, and the website is superbly designed.

Free Hillsong mp3
Throughout the course of the year many fantastic free and legal songs have been recommended. This is up there as one of the best.

My first sermon

I had the nerve-racking experience of doing my first sermon in August. In this post I explained the free things that I found the most useful to help me prepare.

YouVerison launches
Whilst YouVersion is still in beta stage it has come a long way and is in a usable format. It is an exciting website, and I expect in 2008 it will really become both popular and useful.

sermon preparationOn this page you’ll find all the sites that can really help with preparing sermons. Finding sermon illustrations can be one of the trickiest things for instance, but the websites shown below will either provide illustrations for you or stimulate ideas of you own.

The main sermon page will also have some sites that will help, for instance if you want to find actual sermons similar to the one you are about to preach.

I mentioned last week what had helped me most with my first sermon, after a small delay the preach on loving your enemies is now available online.

Recommending it for listening is not bombastic pride, but I have struggled to find preaches to suggest for the weekly sermon section lately. Not due to a lack of quality, but I have lost my iPod lead so I can’t listen to any podcasts on the way to work at the moment! I hope to rectify this situation soon…

Sovereign Grace logoFollowing the lead of Desiring God, Sovereign Grace Ministries have made all of their mp3 sermons available free for download! Sovereign Grace are non-denominational and prefer to think of themselves as a family of Churches passionate about the gospel of Jesus Christ. This passion comes through in their sermons.

The exciting thing about this news is there are some really anointed preachers from Wayne Grudem’s style of teaching to C.J.Mahaney’s humorous and touching preaches. Some of the better known preachers included are:

Ease of use and Presentation

You can search either by the preacher, or the subject and many of the sermons also include the outline of preach in pdf format.

what really helped me the most was God!

The reason that there was a severe reduction in the number of posts over the last two or so weeks is that I had been asked to do a sermon at my Church. I was surprised just how much time it takes to pull together a forty five minute talk! It struck me that a lot of the things that helped me most are mentioned on this website.

Of course, what really helped me the most was God! Without His help and guidance it would have been a dull and pitiful preach. And secondly, my pastor’s guidance and feedback was vital. Assuming that these are a given though, what else did I find the most useful? When I had got the basic framework of what God wanted me to bring what helped me to pull it together?

1) eSword

There is no doubt that eSword came top of the list. It makes it so easy to find related verses to the ones you are looking at. The dictionaries and commentaries also proved really useful in adding context and background to the passages. It is also simple to paste any verses you may need directly into your notes.

2) Desiring God

Bible studyI read several books (or rather parts of books) but there is no doubt that second to the bible the Desiring God website was most helpful in clarifying my thoughts. Rather then listening to any of John Piper’s sermons I found it most useful to read them and mull over his thoughts. His sermons are very rich and biblically sound and there were many things I wanted to say in my preach that I couldn’t put into words. Reading his sermons really helped to guide me in how to express the topics being covered.

Also, it must be said the Desiring God website is so well laid you can find what you are looking for within minutes. I don’t have the patience to dig around the internet on probable wild goose chases! There were many sites which I gave up on looking at because it was so difficult to find things.

3) Sermon Illustrations

I found Sermon Illustrations useful for helping find illustrations to add a bit of colour to the preach. Interestingly (at a stretch!), when I looked over my notes I only had one illustration from this site in my preach. What I found was this site helped guide me in the direction of the kind of illustration that may help - and I then I could find more culturally suitable examples (there is an American slant to the illustrations).

I haven’t actually reviewed this site yet, but it is in the list of ’sites yet to be reviewed’ on the sermon page of this site.

So how did it go?

I think the preach went well, certainly for a first attempt! It was very challenging as it was about loving enemies. It should be published on the internet soon so I’ll let you all know when you can listen to it!

There has been another collection of sermons added to the Desiring God website. According to the Desiring God Blog, “Every two years John Piper completes a rotation of weekend seminars on different aspects of Christian doctrine and practice.”

These seminars added include the following areas:

  • Biblical Eldership
  • Desiring God
  • Future Grace
  • Gravity and Gladness on Sunday Morning: The Pursuit of God in Corporate Worship
  • Prayer, Meditation, and Fasting
  • Sexual Complementarity: The Pursuit of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood
  • Suffering for the Sake of the Body: The Pursuit of People Through Pain
  • TULIP
  • Why We Believe the Bible

Also, you may want to read an article on the ‘Between Two Worlds’ blog which touches on the Desiring God website, and how providing free stuff helps to spread the gospel.

Newfrontiers logoNewfrontiers is a worldwide family of churches numbering around 500 churches in over 40 nations around the world. In fact the church I attend is a member of Newfrontiers, and having only been a member of one church it is obviously a group of churches that I love. The mission of Newfrontiers is as follows:

“With a passionate commitment to build the church according to New Testament principles, we believe that the most effective form of evangelism is worked out from strong local churches.”

Just a couple of week ago there was the annual “leaders” training in Brighton (UK) which I was fortunate enough to attend some of. This is leaders in a broad sense, so for instance it would include small group leaders and worship leaders. It is certainly not just for the actual top dogs in the churches. Because it is a global church many people obviously cannot attend, and therefore all of the sermons are made available on the internet. There is a few other bits and bobs on the website as well:

Main content

  • Sermons from various conferences
  • Theological papers
  • Bible Study - Closer to God
  • Monthly magazine

Sermons

The sermons cover the following conferences:

  • Together on a mission 2006 & 2007
  • Mobilise 2006 & 2007
  • Kingdom Come 2007

“Together on a mission” is the leaders conference I mentioned earlier and covers many areas including running alpha, preaching, spiritual authority, church planting and The Authority And Inerrancy Of The Bible.

Mobilise happens alongside the Together on a mission conference and is aimed towards students and 20s with the focus on mission (whether that be domestically or abroad). Some of the sermons include Preaching the Bible in the 21st Century, Making good life decisions and Duty, Discipline Or Devotion?

The Kingdom Come conference has more of the same.

What is great about these preaches is that they are all aimed at building up the church’s leaders and as such can cover a slightly different content than on a normal Sunday. So for instance, on a Sunday you would expect (I hope!) to hear the gospel load and clear to bring salvation - but the aim of these talks is training.

The quality of speakers is high and does not just include people from Newfrontiers churches. For instance there is quite a few preaches from Rob Rufus and Wayne Grudem. All of the preaches (that I have heard) firmly realise that it is through God’s power and grace that we can become great leaders. There are no quick fix answers or “pay $1,000 for blessing”. But that does not mean we should not strive to improve ourselves and this where listening to these sermons can really help.

If you prefer, you can also subscribe to itunes and get one preach a week direct to your iPod/mp3 player.

Theological papers

These papers look at some of the hot potato issues that rear themselves in the church and includes issues such as atonement, euthanasia and masculinity. These are provided in pdf format and tend to be rather meaty in their content - not the kind of thing to read in a spare five minutes! They are superbly written though and cover social, historical and biblical arguments.

Bible Study - Closer to God

There is also a weekly bible study from Scripture Union’s ‘Closer to God’. These are fantastic courses to do. They are not too heavy but are very rewarding. In many ways they are bit like daily devotions but as you get a couple of questions you are forced to apply it to your life. It also builds the study into your time with God so that it does not just become an exercise in puffing up your mind.

Monthly magazine

You can also get the monthly Newfrontiers magazine. This is not simply a newsletter but includes lots of teaching, book reviews and interviews of prominent Christians.

Ease of use etc.

The sermons are sorted by conference, speaker with the topics covered clearly shown so it does not take long to see what you are after.

Presentation

This is a good site, not flashy or anything but well designed and laid out.

Summary

If you are interested in learning more about any aspect of contributing to your church, then you are likely to find the sermons here of use.
