Christmas Lantern

Whilst many of us will be unable to get to church on Christmas Day either because our church doesn’t have a service, or because we’re busy in the kitchen preparing a feast, this doesn’t mean we don’t get to hear a great Christmas sermon!

Whilst the advance of online media will never replace meeting together, the wealth of sermons on line is perfectly suited to help in this situation. So if you are looking for some great free Christmas sermons then here is a selection of some of the best places to find them on the internet.

I doubt you’ll have time to listen or read all of them, but you’ll definitely find something enriching in the selection of free Christmas sermons below:

Desiring God

John Piper’s Desiring God website is packed full of great content, here is a selection of just a few of the best Christmas sermons preached:

Click on the links below to listen or read the sermons, some you can even watch:

Charles Spurgeon

If you want a deep Christmas sermon then look no further than Charles Spurgeon. Here are four Christmas sermons from the Spurgeon Archives. Obviously none of Spurgeon’s sermons were recorded so these are text versions of his sermons:

John MacArthur

John MacArthur has just made his entire back catalogue of sermons available free online. Here are three from the archives:

Mars Hill

This Christmas sermon by Mark Driscoll is the culmination of the Vintage Jesus series and looks at the historical significance of the birth of Christ and the lasting changes it has left on earth.

You can visit the Mars Hill website to listen to it, or even just watch the sermon below.

Holy Trinity Brompton

Here are two sermons from the Church that created the Alpha course:

Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards was not big on Christmas sermons but his Glorious Grace sermon is one of his most powerful early sermons, although it is not known exactly when it was preached.

Desiring God have released the short film that they have produced for the conference “James 3: A story”. It is just over 5 minutes long and if you have a family and a spare five minutes you should watch it. I found it challenging even before the ending. It is free to be distributed, and you can watch it here:

You can also access the YouTube version or ipod version through the podcast.

Suffering and the Sovereignty of God
by John Piper, Justin Taylor and various
Download book | Study guide

Various essays that reconcile the sovereignty of God with our suffering.

Suffering and the Sovereignty of God by John PiperNote: The display and/or download of this book is for personal use only and it may not be distributed, duplicated, or used for any commercial purpose.

Suffering and the Sovereignty of God is a mixture of essays from various authors including John Piper Joni Eareckson Tada, Steve Saint, Carl Ellis, David Powlison, Dustin Shramek, and Mark Talbot. There is a very strong theological underpinning to the book, but goes past merely being an exercise in systematic theology (not that that is necessarily bad). Many of the essays are personal and cover the suffering of the authors, but always related to God’s sovereignty. The Desiring God website says that the book urges readers “to look to Christ, even in suffering, to find the greatest confidence, deepest comfort, and sweetest fellowship they have ever known.”

This is a powerful book on subject that has perplexed many Christians and non-Christians for centuries. Often when we are suffering or struggling it can be difficult to see just how God is being sovereign in our lives. Hopefully, reading this book will help draw us back to Jesus in our suffering.

As well as the pdf book, there is also a very useful study guide at the Desiring God website. It is worth noting that the Desiring God ministry allow the study guide to be reproduced freely with only a few caveats (unlike the main book which is purely for personal use).

To get the free pdf download simply go to the Desiring God website at this link and then select the ‘Read this book online (PDF)’ link.

You can also read or listen to the messages , from the Suffering and Sovereignty conference should you wish to have more materials after reading the book.

R. Albert Mohler said the following about Suffering and the Sovereignty of God:

“John Piper and friends tackle some of the hardest and most significant issues of Christian concern, producing one of the most honest, faithful, and helpful volumes ever made available to thinking Christians. It is filled with pastoral wisdom, theological conviction, biblical insight, and spiritual counsel. This book answers one of the greatest needs of our times—to affirm the sovereignty of God and to ponder the meaning of human suffering. We need this book.”
R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky

There are some great talks available from anointed preachers including Mark Driscoll and John Piper.

The 2008 Desiring Conference is based on the power and importance of the words we used, coupled with the wonder of God (as you cold no doubt tell from the image on this post!).

What Jesus Demands from the World
by John Piper
Download book | Study guide

Does Jesus make demands of us? If so, what are they?

What Jesus Demands from the World by John PiperNote: The display and/or download of this book is for personal use only and it may not be distributed, duplicated, or used for any commercial purpose.

The verse on the cover of this book says “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me”. Pretty strong words from Jesus, but just what is this authority and how does it impact us and the world? In “What Jesus Demands from the World” John Piper looks at the commands that Jesus gave. However this is not a legalistic list of rules. Rather it is demands that are good for us, demands that will help us drawer closer to Jesus. John Piper says that Jesus’ demands can be summed up as “Trust and treasure me above all.”

Wherever you are in your spiritual walk with Jesus this book is both challenging and thought provoking.

As well as the pdf book, there is also a very useful study guide at the Desiring God website.
To get the free pdf download of “What Jesus Demands from the World” simply go to the Desiring God website at this link and then select the ‘Read this book online (PDF)’ link.

If you would like to hear John Piper’s summary of “What Jesus Demands from the World” then click here or on the media player below:

Here are some quotes about the book:

“This book is a special gift from the pen of John Piper. How long has it been since you carefully reflected upon the authoritative commands of Christ? Through these pages you will encounter the Savior and experience the transforming effects of the gospel. Few endeavors are more worthy of your time.”
C. J. Mahaney, Sovereign Grace Ministries

“This is a peculiar book. It assumes that the four Gospels are true and unified. It assumes that Jesus not only does things for us but also makes demands of us. And it assumes that Jesus has authority over everyone regardless of their religion, gender, race, income, sexuality, nationality, or culture. You will likely not agree with every point. But you will hear from a Jesus who is more than a soft-spoken, effeminate, marginalized, Galilean hippie-peasant in a dress and has the peculiar notion that he alone is Lord.”
Mark Driscoll, Pastor, Mars Hill Church, Seattle

For Your Joy
by John Piper
Download book

A small evangelical book for outreach

for-your-joy.jpgNote: The display and/or download of this book is for personal use only and may not be distributed, duplicated, or used for any commercial purpose.

At 39 pages this pocket sized book (or pamphlet) may be quick to read, but it could have a life changing affect on its recipient. John Piper wrote “For Your Joy” as an evangelistic tool to help share Jesus with unbelievers. It aims to remove the image many people have of a boring church, with one of Jesus who is calling them to come to him with joy.

For Your Joy covers many of the key foundations and questions that people have of Christianity and God such as:

  • Why did Jesus have to die?
  • How can I love a God who allows so much evil?

The writing is concise, biblically based and has the gospel shouting out of any page. If you want a short but rich book to give to a non-Christian this could be just the thing.

To get the free pdf download simply go to the Desiring God website at this link and then select the ‘Read this book online (PDF)’ link. You can also currently purchase the book at reduced prices ($1 for 1, $0.30 each for 50 or more, $0.25 each for 300 or more) by visiting the same page.

In Our Joy
by John Piper
Download book

The Christian life is hard but we can have Joy by living with Jesus. A discipleship book for any Christian

in-our-joy.jpg>Note: The display and/or download of this book is for personal use only and may not be distributed, duplicated, or used for any commercial purpose.

In Our Joy is a pocket book that is a selection of chapters from John Piper’s book What Jesus Demands from the World. It is written as a discipleship book to encourage and challenge Christians to fully follow Jesus. In Our Joy clearly spells out the costs of becoming a Christian, and the hard road we face. However it counteracts this by reminding that it is our joy in Jesus that sustains us, and that without Jesus all of our striving would be wasted. Many books and distorted Christian theologies can assume that with faith, we can have everything. With faith we can have money, health and not have a hard life. But our joy is not supposed to be derived from our circumstances but from Jesus and our relationship with God.

Amazing Grace in the Life of William Wilberforce
by John Piper
Download book | Wilberforce wikipedia bio

A short book on the spiritual life of William Wilberforce

William WilberforceNote: The display and/or download of this book is for personal use only and may not be distributed, duplicated, or used for any commercial purpose.

William Wilberforce is best known for his successful and hard-working effort in abolishing the slave trade in Great Britain. At seventy pages this book does not attempt to provide a complete biography of William Wilberforce, rather it focuses on his spiritual and Christian life. As with most of John Piper’s books it is very well written and it helps put the Christian driving force to William Wilberforce’s life to the fore, which many biographies fail to do.

To get the free pdf download simply go to the Desiring God website at this link and then select the ‘Read this book online (PDF)’ link. You can also read or listen to John Piper’s biographical message on Wilberforce, or watch John Piper talk about the new book.

The Desiring God website says:

In this concise volume, John Piper tells the story of Wilberforce’s transformation from an unbelieving young politician into a radically God-centered Christian and how his deep spirituality helped to change the moral outlook of a nation.
