Strength for the Journey is a modern daily devotion from Joe Stowell provided by RBC ministries (who also provide the Our Daily Bread daily devotional). It is very well written, and perfect for those who want a devotion with a ‘bit more meat’.
Joe Stowell serves as teaching pastor at Harvest Bible Chapel and the RBC website says of him:
His prevailing passions are to express the heart of the gospel by keeping Christ preeminent in all of life; to embrace the body of Christ across color and class distinctions; and to focus attention on ministry needs in the urban centers, as well as on global needs and trends.
The daily devotions are relatively long, about 2-3 times as long as your normal devotion. So if you feel most devotions are just too short this would be a good choice.
One of the real strong points of Strength for the Journey is the application questions at the end. This is a key part to getting the most out of any devotion, and the questions are always well written by Joe Stowell.
Getting the devotion
The easiest way to access the devotion is to go to the main page of the website each day.
What sets Strength of the Journey apart from most other daily devotions is that the message is provided via podcast. Alternatively you can download it in mp3 format, should you want to listen to an older message – or to listen to a current message online.
Here is the shortcut for the message given today if you want to listen:
You can also subscribe to the RSS feed, although as with Our Daily Bread the feed only shows the first paragraph of the text so it cannot be used as a method of actually reading the devotion. Also in keeping with Our Daily Bread there is no email version available – so lots of people won’t be able to access the devotion in a format they like and will use.
Summary
Strength for the Journey is a really good devotion that is more in depth than many daily devotions with great application questions included. With a podcast and mp3 version available, Strength for the Journey is great choice of devotion.
