Update on downloaded ESV audio bible

Earlier this year I posted on the ability to download the ESV bible in audio format. This functionality still exists and is still allowed to be used but I have found out that due to copyright reasons there is a limit on the number of verses you can have at any time.

You should download no more than 250 verses, and also shouldn’t have more than an entire book (should it be less than 250 verses). You can read the full copyright notice at their website.

I apologise for this oversight and error on my part, as I strive to ensure all resources that I include are completely legal.

  1. I looked at the page you linked to, but I believe that you are coming to the wrong conclusion. The first part was about using the ESV in your print resource (Iike a book) and the second was about quoting the ESV in your audio resources (like an audio sermon). It has nothing to do with the free audio Bible they’ve provided.

“The ESV text may be quoted for audio use (audio cassettes, CDs, audio television) up to two hundred fifty (250) verses without express written permission of the publisher providing that the verses quoted do not amount to a complete book of the Bible nor do the verses quoted account for 50 percent or more of the total text of the work in which they are quoted.”

  2. Hello Andrew,

That was was the interpretation I initially had, which is why I was happy to include it. However I have since been in discussion with ESV directly and they have said that this limit is placed on the audio bible as well as the written word.
